Relationships Marketing, a fundraising company based in London, United Kingdom has started a campaign to get their hands on people who are registered with Telephone Preference service (TPS is a British alternative of Do Not Call list).
They are calling for the government to rethink their policy and allow charities making calls to households which have entered TPS. The fact is that more than 50% of British households have listed their numbers with the TPS and now charities and fundraisers find it really difficult to squeeze money out of the remainder.
However, you have to remember that a nuisance is a nuisance wherever it comes from. If I have listed my number with the Telephone Preference service, it means I want to have a total control of who calls me.
In USA the Federal Trade commission has exempted charities and political parties from being obliged to comply with DNC rules. In Britain so far the sense and reason has prevailed. If things change, I feel it will be necessary to form a society to protect peoples’ privacy from any nuisance calls.
Remember that large amount of telemarketing fraud is generated through begging calls! Always check before you give to charity. There is a brilliant government run website for UK charities. Click UK charity search and you’ll be able to search for the cause that is close to your heart AND check if your chosen charity is actually registered. If not, better spend the money somewhere else!
Don’t get me wrong, I support several charities but I choose them myself according to my walk of life and preferences. If you would like My opinion is that unsolicited begging letters and charity calls are no different from spam. What do you think?
