TRAI – Telecom Regulatory Authority of India – has forcefully disconnected more than 10,000 telephone lines belonging to telemarketing companies that send unsolicited voice broadcasts and make cold calls. Majority of these illegal telemarketers has also been fined a princely sum of $10 (or $20 for hard violations)
According to http://infotech.indiatimes.com there are more than 344 million landline users in India. Only 18 million of them have applied for an inclusion into the National Do Not Call Registry. But even these protected phone lines get a decent amount of unsolicited telemarketing calls.
The Department of Telecommunications of India (DOT) requires that all telemarketing companies register with them. So far more than 19,000 telemarketers have registered with DOT. The aforementioned line cuts have affected mostly companies that have not registered with DOT thus violating the law, however, around 2,000 of the cut lines had been in use by official (DOT registered) telemarketers.
Unsolicited calls gradually become a serious problem for India.

Wow, I can see why it would be a problem. With that many telemarketers and since they’re not abiding by the law – that could lead to a problem!
Yes, it is a problem. Many telemarketing boiler rooms are situated in India. They are plaguing both local market and USA!
I cannot get the idiots at 801-785-2724 to leave me alone. They called about 8 times last week and once already once today. I have been polite, not-so-polite, plain, and now I’m rude. They claim to be representing Google and have my address. If I could only reach thru the phone to touch them!!
