So you like blobbing on the phone and everybody says you’re a chatter-box? How about turning talking into your career? Depending on your talent, luck and country of residence you can earn a pretty decent income from telemarketing jobs.
Some telemarketing companies ask that you have previous experience but in most cases you can start by just displaying a pleasant telephone manner and good people skills. Different companies have different approaches in staff training and if they find you a worthy candidate, they will be happy to train you. Let me put it this way: you can teach marketing basics and cold calling scripts to a monkey but if he lacks talking skills (or should we call it the gab talent) he will be a very bad telemarketing monkey. See where I’m going?
So how much telemarketing jobs can pay you? It depends on the country you live in.
In Great Britain telemarketing jobs pay around £9.00 - £11.00 ($12.80 - $16.00) per hour, which totals to £17,500 to £22,000 ($25 - 31,500) per annum for a nice short 37.5 hour working week. Chances are you can arrange to work extra time.
Australia is another paradise for telemarketing jobs. You can earn more than AUD 20 per hour or AUD 41,000 p.a. ($12.60 and $26,000 respectively)
It is a bit more difficult in North America. In USA you will get paid $12 to $15 per hour or 25,000 to 31,000 p.a. whereas in Canada it can be even lower $9 to $15 hourly - $20,800 to 31,000 p.a. Don’t forget that these are only base salaries. You can earn a bit less while an apprentice.
It may sound not much yet remember that if you’re good, you excel and you bring money to the business, you will be paid nice bonuses. Check before you apply that the company you’re going to work with will actually pay you performance based bonuses.
The salaries are brought down by unwise businesses out-sourcing their telemarketing to Asian boiler rooms. Hence we get the unhappy customers, low quality and situations when customers don’t even understand what the telemarketers are talking about.

Telemarketers don’t get nearly paid enough for the type of high stress atmosphere place they work in.
Thanks for the blog.
Good stuff!
Honestly, it wouldn’t really matter how much telemarketing jobs pay- actually I take that back….In order for telemarketing to be really appealing, they would have to pay their employees A LOT of money. It’s kind of like being a sales person; no one likes them, but someone’s gotta’ do it!
StubHub, that’s right. It is very stressful but some people really like doing this kind of thing.
Attorney, I agree, it is a challenge to become a telemarketer whom people like
If he believes in what he’s selling and if the product is really good… but then many telemarketers are locked in boiler-rooms and I really feel sorry for them.
I agree that telemarketing is a very stressful job, however it is a high earning enviroment, and there are so many people who love doing this job.
And it has too 3 requirements for doing it:
- Loving the job
- have a good phone tone
- Be convincing !!!
Funny picture. That monkey is gonna send someone to drug rehab
I don’t think they have such big salaries, i’ll guess it’s not very good paid
