Here we are! The first precedent is created. Government of Australia has decided to make telemarketers pay for Do Not Call Register maintenance.
The DNC Register opened almost year ago and attracted more than one million Australians who were eager to sign up. Telemarketers who trouble people included in this Register may face legal fines up to $1 million AUD.
According to business.theage.com.au the maintenance of Do Not Call telemarketing list cost Australian government more than $1,400,000 AUD a year. Now this burden will be carried by telemarketers.
If you are about to run your voice broadcast or telemarketing campaign in Australia, please check information about Do Not Call Register. You can also follow the same link if you are an Australian bothered by naughty telemarketers. Unfortunately, Australian DNC works in a similar way its foreign analogues do - i.e. politicians and charity organisations can still breach the DNC list and trouble people who have opted out.
Meanwhile other main DNC lists in USA, United Kingdom and Canada are maintained and funded by government. It is almost certain it will not stay that way for long. Although telemarketing and voice broadcasting can still bring quality sales leads, future telemarketers will have to bear more responsibility and costs.
